Description
An atypical subject within Hasui's largely depopulated landscape practice, this print introduces children as figures animating a waterside scene. The boat and shoreline setting situates the work within a coastal or riverine locale, likely rural Japan, where small wooden fishing craft were everyday objects. Hasui's handling of children in landscape follows the shin-hanga interest in reviving quotidian genre subjects without the erotic charge of bijin-ga. The water surface would receive bokashi gradations to convey light reflection, while the figures provide scale and narrative incident against the broader scenic composition. The treatment of the boat's hull and its relation to the shallow water plane demonstrates Hasui's precise rendering of reflective surfaces.
