Description
The third known Children's Day design in Hasui's commemorative series shows his sustained engagement with this seasonal subject. Tango no Sekku (the Boys' Festival, later renamed Children's Day in 1948) was one of Japan's five classical sekku seasonal nodes, and Hasui's multiple treatments suggest both market demand and personal interest in the visual possibilities. The interplay between streamers aloft on bamboo poles and the ground-level presence of figures or architecture would give the composition its vertical dynamism. Hasui's economy with figure drawing — learned during his early years as a textile pattern designer — is evident in any figural elements, which function as accent rather than narrative focus.
