Description
One of at least four Children's Day commemorative designs by Hasui, this print participates in a series distinguished by date of issue or compositional variation. The koinobori subject offered Hasui a rare opportunity to work with strong graphic color — the orange, red, and black of carp-scaled streamers — within his otherwise muted atmospheric palette. A landscape backdrop of rooftiles, pines, or river bend would ground the festive imagery in recognizable Japanese domestic topography. Such commemorative editions were often issued in smaller press runs than Hasui's major landscape series, making individual variant designs comparatively scarce. The carving of the carp scale patterns required technical precision from the block specialist.
