Description

Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, is one of the world's largest active volcanic calderas, and its open grassy caldera rim — the Kusasenri plateau — offers panoramic views of the central cone against broad sky. Hasui's dusk treatment of this subject would likely emphasize the dramatic silhouette of the volcanic peak against a gradated sky moving from amber near the horizon through deep indigo at the zenith, a transition suited to the bokashi technique in which printer's baren work wet pigment across the surface of washi for smooth tonal gradients. The volcanic landscape differs markedly from Hasui's typical forested mountain subjects, requiring an open, horizontal composition with minimal vegetation to capture the exposed character of the caldera terrain. The print likely appeared in a Kyushu travel or regional series.
