Description

Minano is a small town in the Chichibu region of Saitama Prefecture, set in a narrow mountain valley through which the Arakawa River runs. Hasui's evening view likely places the viewer near the river, looking toward wooded hillsides under a cooling twilight sky. The mountain topography of Chichibu—steep, forested ridges enclosing riverside settlements—would provide strong compositional framing through layered receding planes. Hasui frequently depicted rural towns in the Kantō hinterland as part of his broader landscape survey, and the Chichibu region offered subjects distinct from the coastal and urban scenes that dominate his output: quieter, more intimate river valley compositions where mist and seasonal color play central roles. Evening light in the valley would produce the short-cast shadows and warm-to-cool sky transitions Hasui rendered through careful bokashi gradation.
