Description
The fifth of six variant editions, this print continues Hasui's sustained engagement with the iconic O-torii of Itsukushima Shrine at Miyajima. The existence of multiple editions across a long publication history reflects both the print's commercial importance and the technical evolution of the Watanabe workshop's printing processes over decades. Later editions of popular Hasui compositions sometimes show adjustments to registration accuracy, changes in color ink formulation, or shifts in overall tonal contrast relative to first editions. The essential compositional elements—the gate's vertical form reflected in water, the evening sky graduated from warm light near the horizon to cooler tones overhead, and the forested Miyajima hillside in the distance—remain consistent across the series while individual editions differ in their precise atmospheric rendering.
