Description

This oban-format print depicts Sôemon-chô, the celebrated entertainment district running along the south bank of the Dôtonbori Canal in Osaka, at the close of day. Hasui likely rendered the scene with reflections of lantern light rippling across dark water, the characteristic bokashi gradations of the shin-hanga tradition bleeding the sky from deep indigo into warm amber near the horizon. This print belongs to Hasui's Collected Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition (Nihon fûkei shû II Kansai hen), a series documenting sites in the Kinki region. Sôemon-chô's theatre signs, tea-house facades, and pedestrian foot traffic gave Hasui material for a composition balancing architectural geometry against the atmospheric dissolution of dusk, a pairing central to his mature landscape practice.
