Description

Titled Evening at Tagonoura (Tago no Ura no Yuu), this oban woodblock print presents the coastal bay of Tago no Ura as evening descends. Hasui's treatment of the site draws on a long tradition connecting the bay to Mt. Fuji's snow-covered summit, visible from the shoreline on clear days. The composition likely foregrounds still water rendered with flat, reflective washes beneath a sky in graduated tones from pale gold to deep blue-grey, with Fuji's silhouette anchoring the far distance. The Tago no Ura no Yuu title appears across multiple printings in Hasui's catalogue, indicating the design's commercial success and the repeated pulling of blocks over years. Each impression was hand-printed on washi using a baren, with individual woodblocks cut for each color zone.
