Description

This woodblock impression of Evening at Tagonoura belongs to the group of Tago no Ura no Yuu printings that document the sustained popularity of Hasui's coastal evening design. Tago no Ura faces Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture and offers one of the most celebrated views of Mt. Fuji from sea level, a fact that gave the site persistent appeal for both publishers and collectors. Hasui would have sketched the site on location before translating the composition into block designs in collaboration with Watanabe's studio carvers. The resulting print likely balances a wide, low horizon with the vertical punctuation of Fuji in the distance, the water's surface serving as a passive mirror for the dusk sky above.
