Description
This sixth impression of the Tago no Ura no Yuu design contributes to one of the larger groups of related printings within Hasui's catalogue for any single composition. The bay's wide horizontal plane and clear sight-line to Mt. Fuji made it well-suited to the oban format's landscape orientation, and Hasui's skill with water and sky rendered in graduated bokashi made the subject a natural fit for his technical strengths. The print would have been produced on kôzo-based washi using multiple woodblocks, each carrying a distinct color or tonal zone. The careful registration required to align successive blocks — essential for the smooth gradation in open sky — reflects the precision craftsmanship of the Watanabe atelier's specialist printers.
