Description

This impression continues a long print run of one of Kawase Hasui's most frequently requested designs. The Lake Kasumigaura fishing village is depicted at the transitional hour when the sky's chromatic intensity peaks, a moment captured through the graduated bokashi technique applied across both the sky and its water reflection. The overhanging willows and moored boats remain the defining compositional elements, consistent across all impressions of the design, while variations in ink density and the particular washi batch produce subtle shifts in the print's overall tonal key. Later impressions in an extended run sometimes exhibit slightly flatter tonal ranges as carved woodblocks accumulate wear at their relief edges; experienced collectors assess such factors when evaluating individual impressions. The composition's endurance across multiple decades of printings reflects both its popular reception and its technical soundness — a well-resolved bokashi sky ages gracefully because the graduated structure remains legible even as pigment saturation diminishes over a long edition run.
