Description

Titled formally as Ushibori no yûgure (Evening at Ushibori), this print depicts the fishing village on the western shore of Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture — one of the landscapes Hasui returned to most consistently across his career. The composition shows the lake at twilight, with traditional wooden fishing boats at rest in shallow water and arching willow trees framing the near shore. The evening sky above Kasumigaura's flat Kantō basin is rendered through multiple graduated bokashi passes, layering warm amber and vermillion tones near the horizon beneath deepening purples and blues overhead. The water surface below mirrors the sky with subtle distortions introduced by movement on the lake, grounding the atmospheric upper register in the material world of the water. Published by Watanabe Shōzaburō, this design exemplifies shin-hanga's approach to landscape — technically refined color printing applied to quiet, vernacular Japanese scenery rather than the urban spectacle or dramatic vistas favored by earlier ukiyo-e traditions.
