Description
Atami, a coastal hot spring resort town on the Izu Peninsula south of Tokyo, was a favored subject for Hasui during his extensive travels across Japan documenting regional landscapes. This print, depicting the view from the Abe Inn at evening, would likely show the arc of Sagami Bay below, with the darkening water reflecting the last light of day and lanterns or lights beginning to appear along the shore. The elevated vantage point from the inn's terrace or window creates a layered composition of foreground architectural elements, mid-ground rooftiles, and the broad expanse of sea and sky. Atami's geography—hills descending steeply to the bay—gives Hasui the kind of deep recession he used effectively in his oban-format landscape prints.
