Description

A third variant impression of the Nakanoshima Park composition, this woodblock print depicts the Sapporo island park at evening moonrise. The reflective surface of the Toyohira River surrounding Nakanoshima is central to the composition's luminosity—moonlight penetrates the water, creating a counterpoint to the dark silhouette of the park's tree canopy. Hasui traveled to Hokkaido during research trips in the 1930s to document landscapes beyond the Honshu subjects that dominated his earlier career, and Sapporo's parks and waterways provided subjects suited to his meisho-e approach. The numbered suffix distinguishes this impression from related print runs, allowing comparison of color tone, baren pressure, and ink saturation across what may be early versus later printings.
