Description

Dated 1932, this Shōwa-period print depicts Imai Bridge under a sudden evening shower, a yūdachi being the characteristically brief but intense summer downpour of the Japanese rainy season. Hasui's treatment of yūdachi subjects typically employs diagonal rain lines of high density, suggesting the force of the shower against figures or structures caught without shelter. The bridge setting likely includes one or more figures on foot, their umbrellas or hunched postures providing human scale and narrative dimension within the landscape. By 1932 Hasui's printing collaborations had shifted following Kawaguchi's death, and technical refinements in color registration are evident in dateable works of this period. The composition's design reflects the oban horizontal or vertical format standard to his commercial output for Watanabe Shōzaburō.
