Description

Tosho Shrine, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and located within Ueno Park, provides a setting that combines Edo-period religious architecture with one of Tokyo's most celebrated hanami sites. This print likely depicts the stone-lantern-lined approach or the main hall visible through canopies of blossoming cherry trees, with the scene dimmed to evening tones. Hasui's treatment of blossoms in low light required considerable technical skill: the pale petals could not simply be left as bare washi but required delicate tinting to read as illuminated against a darkening sky. The warm glow of stone lanterns may punctuate the composition, casting pools of orange light that counterbalance the cool evening atmosphere. As a Tokyo meisho-e subject, the print participates in a genre stretching back through Hiroshige's views of Edo.
