Description
A fourth documented impression or variant composition depicting the Seto Inland Sea, this print reflects Hasui's sustained engagement with the region's geography over multiple sketching trips. The Inland Sea's maze of islands and inlets offered him near-limitless compositional possibilities: a foreground promontory framing distant islets, or a low horizon pushing the eye across open water toward a fading coastline. Shin-hanga publishers such as Watanabe Shozaburo would issue multiple versions of popular subjects, sometimes with subtle differences in key-block registration, color mixing, or atmospheric treatment. This impression may emphasize a different time of day or season compared to related Inland Sea designs, distinguishing itself through the handling of reflected light on water or cloud formations overhead.
