Kaesong in Korea (Chosen Kaijo), from the Korean Views Supplement published in 1940, depicts the ancient city of Kaesong (Kaijo in Japanese) — the capital of the Goryeo dynasty from 918 to 1392, located in present-day North Korea just north of the 38th parallel — with its historic architecture and mountain setting. Kaesong's combination of ancient palace ruins, traditional Korean gabled architecture, and the mountain landscape of the Songdo (Kaesong) highlands gave Hasui a subject with both historical depth and the atmospheric mountain scenery he consistently favored. The Supplement series extended his Korean documentation to this historically significant former capital.
