Description

This print belongs to Hasui's "Souvenirs of Travel I" (Tabi miyage dai isshû) series, published by Watanabe Shôzaburô beginning in 1919—one of Hasui's earliest major series in the shin-hanga format. The series documented regional landscapes drawn from Hasui's sketching trips across Japan, and this composition depicting Kude Beach (Kude no hama) on the Wakasa Bay coast represents his encounter with the Sea of Japan shoreline. As one of the earlier prints in Hasui's career, this subject predates his mature stylistic consolidation and may show greater responsiveness to the Western pictorial conventions Watanabe was introducing into shin-hanga production at the time, including more pronounced atmospheric perspective. Kude Beach in Wakasa Province (present-day Fukui Prefecture) offers the rock-and-pine coastal scenery characteristic of the Wakasa Bay littoral—organized around the meeting of sea and sky, with foreground texture provided by tidal rocks or shoreline vegetation. The Tabi miyage series established the template for Hasui's subsequent landscape publishing, combining travel reportage with formal printmaking craft.
