Description
Hasui's May Rain, Arakawa places the viewer at the edge of the Arakawa River on a wet early-summer day. The composition is characteristically horizontal, with the wide channel occupying much of the sheet and the overcast sky rendered in graduated grey tones through bokashi blending. Rain lines, applied as a separate print layer, animate the otherwise still surface of the water. Silhouetted riverside forms—low embankment, sparse vegetation, possibly a distant bridge pier—recede into the mist. The print's tonal range is narrow and cool, using the washi paper's whiteness to suggest the diffuse luminosity of an overcast rainy sky.
