Description
This impression of Kawase Hasui's May Rain, Arakawa captures the Arakawa River during early-summer rainfall. The composition follows Hasui's established approach to rainy riverscapes: a low horizon, broad water surface, and overcast sky rendered in cool, desaturated tones. Rain lines printed at a diagonal create a sense of falling precipitation without obscuring the underlying landscape. The Arakawa's unique character as a wide, engineered flood-control channel gives this print a more open, unobstructed quality than Hasui's treatments of narrower rivers or coastal inlets. The print reflects the shin-hanga interest in landscapes associated with specific seasons and weather phenomena.
