Description

Published in the Souvenirs of Travel III series (Tabi miyage dai sanshû, circa 1921), this print depicts Mihogaseki, the rocky cape at the western edge of Matsue in Izumo Province, present-day Shimane Prefecture. The cape, with its lighthouse, weathered cliffs, and exposure to the Japan Sea, gave Hasui material quite different from the Pacific and Edo-area landscapes he more frequently depicted. This series documented Hasui's travels through western Japan, and the Mihogaseki composition likely contrasts the rough geometry of the coastline with open gray-green water and a broad sky. The Tabi miyage prints are among his most historically significant, recording landscapes that would change substantially in the twentieth century.
