Description

A second impression or edition of the Misty Night at Miyajima design from Souvenirs of Travel II, this print shares its subject and composition with the companion listing but may reflect differences in printing variables including pigment saturation, the degree of bokashi gradation in the sky and water, or the tone and color of the paper support. In Watanabe's production practice, multiple print runs of popular designs were common, and experienced collectors distinguish early impressions from later ones by the depth of color in dark passages and the precision of registration. The scene itself — Itsukushima Shrine's torii rising from the tidal flats under a softly luminous overcast night sky — was among the most iconic in shin-hanga printmaking. The horizontal stillness of the water, the lacquer-red of the gate structure, and the dissolving treeline behind the shrine buildings together produce the melancholy beauty characteristic of Hasui's nocturnal landscape work.
