Description

This nocturnal print shows a rural dwelling — likely a farmhouse or village residence — under moonlight, a subject that gave Hasui the opportunity to explore the interaction of reflected light, deep shadow, and the textures of traditional Japanese domestic architecture. Moonlit scenes were among the most technically demanding of Hasui's compositions, requiring precise registration across multiple blocks to achieve the luminous gradation of a night sky and the subtle illumination of thatched or tiled roofs. The surrounding landscape — trees, garden, a road or path — would be rendered in near-silhouette, with selective highlights indicating moonlight falling on specific surfaces. The implied stillness and isolation of the country house at night give the composition an introspective quality characteristic of Hasui's quieter domestic subjects, distinct in mood from his festival or shrine prints.
