Description

Izura, on the Pacific coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, is a rugged coastal site known for its sea-eroded cliffs and rock formations — a location also associated with Yokoyama Taikan's atelier. Hasui's nocturnal view of this site likely presents the rocky shoreline under a full or near-full moon, with the sea reflecting cool light across broken water. The Ibaraki coast offered more dramatic geological formations than Hasui's typical bay and harbor subjects, and the title's multiple readings (Isura, Izura, Goura) suggest the place-name presented transcription challenges. Moonlit seascapes required Hasui's printers to achieve bokashi gradations across large areas of sky and water, with key-block lines reserved for cliff edges, wave crests, and architectural elements. This impression and the variant catalogued as -2 likely represent different print states or publication contexts.
