Description

This nocturnal scene depicts Magome, a historic post town in the Ota ward of Tokyo, rendered under moonlight. Hasui likely composed the image around traditional wooden architecture lining a narrow lane, with the moon casting silvery light across tile or thatched rooftops. The shin-hanga technique allowed for subtle gradations of blue and grey in the night sky through careful bokashi blending. Shadows fall in geometric patterns across the road surface while interior lamp-light may warm a window. The print belongs to a group of closely related impressions of this composition, distinguished by variations in edition, publisher's seal, or print run dating. Magome's quietly domestic atmosphere, far from the tourism bustle of Asakusa or Ueno, made it a recurring subject for Hasui's meditations on Tokyo's older, more intimate neighborhoods.
