Description

One of several extant impressions of Hasui's Magome nocturne, this print captures the narrow residential lanes of the Ota ward neighborhood under a rising or full moon. The composition likely places the viewer along a gentle incline — Magome's terrain is slightly hilly — with wooden buildings receding into the middle ground. Hasui's printers employed layered keyblock and color block printing to separate the deep indigo of the night sky from the warmer tones of earthen walls and wooden eaves. Moonlit puddles or wet stone paving could add reflective passages to the lower register. Subtle variation in ink density or paper tone across impressions of this series makes comparison between numbered versions instructive for understanding the print's production history.
