Description

This impression of Hasui's Magome nocturne shows the residential street scene characteristic of the composition, with the moon positioned above or behind roof lines to create a halo or direct illumination of the lane below. The print's tonal range is typical of Hasui's night subjects: a deep blue-black sky achieved through repeated blue ink applications, against which pale washi paper shows through for lit surfaces such as walls and the road surface. The seventh impression in this group may reflect a later print run, potentially showing slightly thinner ink coverage in the sky gradation or modest variation in the seal's coloring. Magome's atmosphere of low wooden structures along a quiet residential street offered Hasui an authentically Edo-period urban texture within Taisho-era Tokyo.
