This impression records Hasui's moonlit view of Sanzen-in temple in Ohara, Kyoto, a composition that belongs to his extensive treatment of temple and shrine landscapes in nocturnal conditions. Sanzen-in's enclosed garden, ancient structures, and moss-covered paths provided a subject suited to the blue-dominant palette Hasui developed for moonlight scenes—soft blues and grey-greens punctuated by pale reflective surfaces suggesting moonlight. The Ohara valley's remoteness gave it a quieter, more meditative character than Kyoto's central monuments, and Hasui's compositional choices in this design likely reflect that quality through sparse human presence and emphasis on natural textures over architectural spectacle.
