Description

Asakusa, Tokyo's historic shitamachi (low city) district and the site of Senso-ji temple, was among Hasui's most frequently depicted urban subjects. A morning rain scene there combines two of his greatest strengths: the atmospheric complexity of rain-wet surfaces and the melancholy quiet of a historic neighborhood before the day's crowds arrive. The composition likely looks toward Kaminarimon or along the Nakamise approach to Senso-ji, with temple lanterns or gate architecture visible through a veil of falling rain rendered as fine diagonal hatching across the print surface. Rain-wet stone and pavement create reflective surfaces that double the color field — lantern reds and gate vermillion appearing again in the puddled foreground. Printed on washi dampened for maximum pigment absorption, the rain effect required precise overprinting of fine lines across an already complex multi-block composition. The title's kanji (浅草の朝の雨) confirms the Asakusa location and the morning hour, placing this among the extended series of rain and atmospheric-condition prints that constitute some of Hasui's most technically demanding work.
