Description
This print depicts Nagahama Beach on the shores of Lake Suimon near Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture, a location celebrated for its pine groves and tranquil coastal scenery. Hasui likely rendered the elongated shoreline with characteristic pine silhouettes framing a stretch of pale sand and calm water, using graduated bokashi to convey the soft tonal shifts of overcast or twilight sky. The composition would draw the eye along the horizontal sweep of the beach toward a distant tree line or headland. Published by Watanabe Shozaburo, the print belongs to Hasui's sustained project of documenting regional Japanese landscapes through the shin-hanga idiom, balancing atmospheric mood with topographical specificity.
