Description

Published within the Selected Views of the Tôkaidô Road series (Tôkaidô fûkei senshû), this print of Nagoya Castle (Nagoya-jô) positions the subject within the tradition of travel imagery that runs from Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations through Hasui's shin-hanga revival. Nagoya was a major post-town on the Tôkaidô, and the castle—built by Tokugawa Ieyasu from 1610–1612—was among the most recognizable landmarks along the route. The series format encouraged a consistent oban sheet size and a compositional approach balancing identifiable landmark with seasonal atmosphere. Hasui's handling likely shows the tower rising above a moat with careful differentiation between stone base, white plaster walls, and dark roof tiles.
