Description

This impression of Night Rain at Kawarako, Ibaraki, records the same riverside town composition as the primary printing but reflects the handcraft variability inherent in woodblock production. Kawarako's architecture and the Kokai River provided Hasui with a subject rooted in regional Japanese landscape outside the more frequently depicted sites of Tokyo and Kyoto. The composition likely positions the viewer at street or riverbank level, looking along a row of buildings in rain, their forms partially obscured by the visual curtain of falling water. Hasui's publisher Watanabe Shozaburo maintained high standards across print runs, but successive impressions inevitably show variation in ink saturation and rain line density. The night sky achieved through bokashi on dampened washi gives the composition atmospheric continuity. The washi itself, hand-laid and sized for print reception, contributes to the soft, absorbed quality of the rain tones.
