Description

Among the variant impressions of Night Rain at Kawarako, Ibaraki, this printing represents the ongoing commercial and artistic life of the design within Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop. Hasui created the original sketches for this composition during his travels through Ibaraki Prefecture, translating direct observation of rain, light, and architecture into the abstracted forms that woodblock printing demanded. The Kawarako scene depicts the town's riverside character in night rain, with wet surfaces and the soft diffusion of light through rain distinguishing this atmospheric subject from Hasui's fair-weather landscapes. Each impression required multiple block prints — key line, sky gradation, architectural color fields, rain lines — applied in precise sequence on washi dampened for ink absorption. Collectors value variant impressions of rain subjects for the visible differences in rain line crispness and the tonal range of the night sky, both reflecting the printer's handling on a given day.
