Description
This print specifically documents a variant state of Hasui's Nishikiura beach composition, distinguished by its early morning light conditions. In shin-hanga practice, variant states of the same block set could be printed with altered color palettes to depict different times of day without re-carving the key block. An early morning reading would likely replace the saturated blues of midday with cooler grays, pale yellows, and soft pinks at the horizon, conveying the low-angle light and mist common to Japan's Pacific coast at dawn. The title's parenthetical clarification (Atami, Nishikiura) situates the scene precisely at the volcanic beach below the clifftop at Nishikiura, where the Izu coastal railway and resort development had brought increased visitor traffic by the Showa period.
