Description
One of multiple recorded impressions of Hasui's Nissaka rain composition, this print reflects the ongoing demand for the subject and the production history common to popular shin-hanga designs. Hasui sketched locations on the Tokaido during travels that were partly nostalgic—the road had largely given way to rail by the Taisho era—and his compositions emphasize the timeless, pre-modern character of the landscape. The rain technique employed here—thin parallel lines printed across the composition using a single block—creates the effect of a steady downpour rather than a violent storm. Depending on the state of the printing block, later impressions may show slightly softer line edges or shifted color values compared to earlier pulls. The scene retains the characteristic stillness of Hasui's rain prints, where weather is atmosphere rather than drama.
