Description
This Onuma Park composition—rendered with diacritical romanization as Önuma Park, Hokkaidö—depicts the lake district in southern Hokkaido near the volcanic cone of Mount Komagatake. The alternate romanization may indicate a different edition or catalog notation. Hasui made several designs of this location, drawn to the scenic contrast between the active volcano's silhouette and the calm, islet-dotted lake surface. The Hokkaido landscape offered distinctly northern subject matter: cooler light, birch and spruce vegetation, and a sense of expansive wilderness absent from his Honshū compositions. The print employs Watanabe's multi-block printing method with careful registration to render tree silhouettes, reflected sky tones, and the gradual tonal shift from water surface to open horizon.
