Description
A third variant composition of Onuma Park in Hokkaido, showing the scenic lake district near Mori and Nanae towns in the Oshima Subprefecture. Hasui's repeated engagement with this site suggests its importance to his northern Japan travel series, likely depicting the park under different seasonal or meteorological conditions from his companion Onuma designs. The volcanic form of Mount Komagatake anchors the composition from a distance while the quiet lake and its wooded islets fill the foreground and middle ground. Graded sky areas employ the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) technique characteristic of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) printing, where moistened [washi](/glossary/washi) and precisely timed pigment application produce smooth tonal transitions that convey the diffuse atmospheric light of the Hokkaido landscape.
