Description
Hasui made this composition of the Ryoshimachi fishing quarter in Shinagawa as part of his ongoing documentation of Tokyo's waterfront neighborhoods during the early Showa period. The subject belongs to his broader series of rainy and overcast cityscapes that established his reputation as a chronicler of atmospheric conditions in the Japanese landscape tradition. The composition shows the wooden structures of the fishermen's quarter reflected in the still water of the inlet, with an overcast tsuyu sky rendered through horizontal bokashi gradation above the roofline. The restrained color scheme — dominated by greys, blues, and muted earth tones — is consistent with Hasui's rainy-weather palette and the aesthetic of subdued seasonal mood that shin-hanga prints cultivated in contrast to the bolder color schemes of earlier ukiyo-e landscape traditions. This impression represents the base state against which other variants are compared.
