Description
This impression belongs to the later phase of the Ryoshimachi edition, when the woodblocks had been used for an extended run. The key-block impression remains legible but shows the slightly softened contours characteristic of well-worn cherry wood. The water reflection in the foreground — a defining feature of the composition — retains its structural clarity: the inverted silhouettes of the fishing-quarter structures mirror the actual architecture in a slightly simplified, darker form. Hasui's choice to depict tsuyu rather than a more conventionally picturesque season reflects the aesthetic priorities of shin-hanga, which valued quietude, melancholy, and the understated over the spectacular. Rainy and overcast conditions dominate a significant portion of his output and constitute one of his most recognized contributions to the genre.
