Description
This third impression of the Yashima sailboat composition reflects the sustained print run typical of Hasui's popular coastal designs. The subject — traditional sailing vessels on the waters off Yashima, with the plateau's cliff profile providing a horizontal backdrop — draws on the meisho-e convention of associating famous sites with their characteristic watercraft and light conditions. Hasui's treatment of water in such prints employs carefully graduated color fields, with the printer applying different blocks for foreground chop and background calm to suggest depth. The pale blues and grays of the Seto Inland Sea atmosphere are built through multiple ink applications on dampened washi, achieving luminosity rather than opacity.
