Description
This third Shichirigahama composition in Hasui's oeuvre demonstrates his sustained interest in the beach as a compositional problem — how to render open coastal space through flat planes of color and line on washi. Each of his Shichirigahama prints differs in atmospheric condition, with this design likely representing a seasonal variant: winter with a pale overcast sky, summer with deep blue water, or autumn with warm low-angle light. The beach curves through the foreground, leading the eye toward the offshore landmark of Enoshima and the distant cone of Fuji if visible. Hasui's printer would have applied graduated bokashi from the horizon upward through the sky, one of the most technically demanding aspects of shin-hanga production.
