Description
Shikotsu-Toya National Park in Hokkaido contains volcanic lakes, hot spring resorts, and rugged mountain terrain — subjects well-suited to Hasui's landscape vocabulary. This print, a second design from or associated with the park, likely focuses on one of the caldera lakes: Lake Shikotsu, the deep cold-water lake surrounded by volcanic peaks, or Lake Toya with its central island. Hasui's Hokkaido prints often carry a quality of northern remoteness distinct from his Honshu landscapes — deeper blues, cooler color palettes, and sparser human presence. The reflecting lake surface would allow him to employ mirror-image color printing, doubling the visual weight of mountains or pine forests above the waterline.
