Description
This second treatment of Shinobazu Pond revisits the Ueno landmark with a different seasonal or atmospheric emphasis than its related print. Hasui returned to Shinobazu across his career, using shifts in light, season, and vantage point to generate compositionally distinct interpretations of the same topography. The pond's characteristic lotus beds, the arched bridge to the Benten island shrine, and the low horizon of the water surface recur as compositional elements. Color distinctions between variants may include winter blues against a pale washi ground, summer greens with full lotus coverage, or autumn ochres as the leaves die back. The handling of water and sky through graduated bokashi printing is central to Hasui's technical approach in all versions of this subject.
