Description

"Yoru no chihan" — night at the pond — treats Shinobazu after dark, when the daylight palette of the lotus beds and shrine architecture is replaced by reflections and near-silhouette. The Benten-dō shrine on its island would appear as a dark form lit partially by lanterns, its vermilion columns reduced to warm amber points in the darkness. The pond surface at night becomes a field of deep indigo interrupted by trembling reflections of lamps or the moon. Hasui's nocturnal Shinobazu prints require careful control of the bokashi gradations in both sky and water passages, and the relative darkness of the composition demands that the printer achieve smooth tonal transitions across large flat areas of the washi sheet without streaking.
