Description
Shuzenji, the ancient hot spring town in the Izu Peninsula of Shizuoka Prefecture, is shown here under rainfall—a subject Hasui returned to throughout his career as rain allowed him to manipulate atmosphere, reflection, and the dissolution of solid forms. The composition likely centers on the Katsura River that runs through the heart of the resort town, its surface broken by rain and mirroring the wooden bridges, traditional ryokan, and overhanging maple trees. Diagonal lines printed in a pale semi-transparent ink represent the falling rain across the entire composition. Wet-season dampness pervades the print through muted, slightly grayed tones across the architecture and foliage.
