Description

This print departs from Hasui's characteristic domestic landscapes, depicting Japanese cavalry advancing across the Manchurian plains at sunset. The vast, flat continental terrain enabled a wide horizon line with an expansive sky rendered in deep amber and ochre through graduated bokashi. Silhouetted horses and riders in formation create a rhythmic frieze against the luminous sky, a compositional device drawn from both Japanese print conventions and Western military imagery. Published during the period of Japanese military expansion on the Asian continent, such war prints (sensoga) were commercially produced alongside the shin-hanga landscape series. The dust raised by the cavalry would likely be rendered as diffuse warm tone merging into the sunset, softening the martial subject in the manner typical of Hasui's atmospheric sensibility.
