Description

A second design or edition in the 'Twenty Views of Tokyo' series depicting Zojo-ji temple in Shiba. While sharing its subject with the companion print, this version likely differs in season, viewpoint, time of day, or color scheme. Hasui published the temple in multiple formulations, exploring how seasonal and atmospheric variation transformed the relationship between its architecture and surroundings. This second version may approach the temple from a different angle, emphasizing the adjacent mausoleum garden, the temple bell, or a lateral view of the sangedatsumon gate. Alternatively, an evening or twilight treatment would distinguish it from a daytime counterpart. The cryptomeria groves that once surrounded the Tokugawa mausolea provided strong vertical elements useful for framing architectural subjects, and Hasui exploited this combination of natural and constructed forms across multiple prints of the same location. Both versions reflect the series' documentary interest in Tokyo's surviving architectural heritage from the Edo period and the shin-hanga movement's practice of revisiting key subjects across different atmospheric conditions.
