Description

A third edition or state of the Kiba Lumber Yard twilight composition. Among Hasui's most reissued designs, the Kiba subject appeared across multiple publishers and print runs during his career and afterward. Each version preserves the essential elements: canal reflections of a sunset sky, log stacks and warehouses silhouetted on the opposite bank, the flat water surface acting as a mirror for the warm upper tonalities. Later editions often show subtle differences in the red-orange tonality of the sunset, with some versions leaning toward deeper amber and others toward cooler rose-pink, depending on the pigments and the freshness of the carved blocks. The structural composition, centered on the visual rhyme between the luminous sky and its distorted canal reflection, remained constant across all editions. Collectively, these multiple versions document both the enduring appeal of the Kiba landscape as a subject and the commercial dynamics of shin-hanga publishing, in which popular designs were recirculated through the market over decades as collector demand continued.
