Description
One of several Hasui compositions depicting Ueno Park in Tokyo, this print shows a view of the park's grounds under conditions specific to season and time of day. Ueno Park's extensive area — encompassing Shinobazu Pond, the approach to the Toshogu Shrine, the main museum boulevard, and [sakura](/glossary/sakura) groves — offered Hasui multiple distinct subjects within a single urban space. This second catalogued version is differentiated from companion prints by the specific area depicted, the season indicated through foliage or snow, or the angle of light. Cherry blossom season made Ueno one of Tokyo's most visited sites each spring, and Hasui's depictions of the park under hanami conditions responded to sustained public demand for landmark Tokyo imagery in [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga). The technical demands of printing large areas of sky and still water required careful regulation of pigment dilution and the dampness of the [washi](/glossary/washi) substrate during production.
